A lean NO.sub.x trap composition. The lean NO.sub.x trap composition utilizes ruthenium in place of higher cost metals such as platinum. The lean NO.sub.x trap composition provides high NO.sub.x storage efficiency and high NO.sub.x conversion efficiency when incorporated in a lean NO.sub.x trap. A method of removing harmful gases using the lean NO.sub.x trap composition is also described.
