Method of transferring connection management information in world wideweb requests and responses

In order to reduce the delay and/or loss of packets caused by the transmission through a large number of routers on the Internet, a direct connection is established between a client (or its proxy) and a server if the client (or its proxy) and the server are connected to the same alternative subnetwork. Control management information, including the type of subnetwork to which each is connected, as well as the address of the client (or its proxy) and the server are transmitted to the other on the Internet in an optional HTTP header field. After receipt of the addressing information, a direct connection is established on the alternative subnetwork between the client (or its proxy) and the server for purposes of streaming information from the server to the client.

Television event marking system

A system for bookmarking viewer selected TV broadcast events and displaying a set of associated internet locations or website hotlinks, comprising the selection of a set of broadcast events using a remote control, and storing a set of event-identifier data associated with the set of selected broadcast events in an activity table, and then generating a set of associated internet locations or website hotlinks by comparing the set of event identifiers with a database of TV schedules, events and company information. The generated set of associated internet locations or website hotlinks can then be used by viewer for access to and display of the selected internet locations associated with the set of selected broadcast events.

System and method for establishing internet communications links

A technique is provided for establishing data communications links and associated telephone calls between customers and customer service representatives. Customers access the Internet from clients. A merchant provides an on-line catalog using a Web server. When the customer requests that a customer service representative contact the customer, linking information is provided to the client. When one of the customer service representatives is available, the server sends a notification packet to the client to notify the customer and to provide the customer with an opportunity to decide whether or not to continue. If the customer decides to continue, an Internet communications link and telephone call are established between the customer and the customer service representative based on the linking information.

Multimedia web page applications for AIN telephony

The disclosure allows for creation of special web-page repositories within subsystems of the present PSTN (public switched telephone network) that conform to present architectures for advanced intelligent network (AIN) constructs in telephony. Such repositories would be formed to receive facsimile (fax) telephone transmissions, convert them to HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) web page format, store the converted results and render the latter available for viewing simultaneously--under control of PSTN call management intelligence--to multiple users of the Internet and World Wide Web subject to authorization of would be viewers by the sending party. A typical application of this capability allows for a PSTN user setting up a voice conference to controllably distribute expository charts to other conference participants, via the Internet, thereby adding a video dimension to the voice conference without imposing a bandwidth strain on the PSTN voice networks currently handling the conference, and also allowing for the transmissions to be sent in an orderly manner coordinated with a given participant's voice presentation so that the conference participants can not merely compete in a random and potentially chaotic manner for making such graphic presentations to each other. Such repositories also would be useful to receive graphic information in forms other than that associated with present-day facsimile transmission; e.g. text generated by word processor and/or e-mail applications, or images generated by ordinary computer-graphic applications, all of which could be sent from computers to respective repositories/servers within the PSTN, via the Internet, after conversion by appropriately configured applets (e.g. mini-applications written in a language consistent with web browsers presently used on computers).

Intelligent method, apparatus and computer program product for automated refreshing of internet web pages

An intelligent method, apparatus and computer program product are provided for automated refreshing of internet web pages. Page data are stored including a record of page data values for each user selected internet web page. The page data values include at least one refresh interval, a last time refreshed and a last time accessed. A user request for refreshing an internet web page is received and the internet web page is refreshed. Utilizing the refreshed internet web page, checking for changes in the refreshed internet web page is performed. Then scanning the stored page data is performed and for each user selected internet web page, the stored refresh interval is compared with a current refresh time interval. For each user selected internet web page, responsive to the current refresh time interval being greater than the stored refresh time interval, the internet web page is refreshed. A feedback message is sent to the user responsive to refreshing an internet web page and the stored refresh interval is updated.

Hierarchical encapsulation of instantiated objects in a multimedia authoring system including internet accessible objects

An application development system, optimized for authoring multimedia titles, enables its users to create selectively reusable object containers merely by defining links among instantiated objects. Employing a technique known as Hierarchical Encapsulation, the system automatically isolates the external dependencies of the object containers created by its users, thereby facilitating reusability of object containers and the objects they contain in other container environments. Authors create two basic types of objects: Elements, which are the key actors within an application, and Modifiers, which modify an Element's characteristics. The object containers (Elements and Behaviors--i.e., Modifier containers) created by authors spawn hierarchies of objects, including the Structural Hierarchy of Elements within Elements, and the Behavioral Hierarchy, within an Element, of Behaviors (and other Modifiers) within Behaviors. Through the technique known as Hierarchical Message Broadcasting, objects automatically receive messages sent to their object container. Hierarchical Message Broadcasting may be used advantageously for sending messages between object containers that may be located remotely from each other, such as over a Local Area Network or the Internet. Even whole object containers may be transmitted and remotely recreated over the network. Furthermore, the system may be embedded within a page of the World-Wide Web.

Electronic coupon distribution

An electronic coupon distribution system providing on-line coupon information for a potential consumer using a personal computer connected to a host computer. A potential consumer using a personal computer and a modem connects to a host computer via the Internet or directly. The potential consumer may specify product preferences or search and view coupons of interest to the consumer. The consumer may then download from the host computer coupon information that may be printed on the potential consumer's printer connected to his personal computer. Information identifying the downloaded coupon is coded or encrypted onto the printed coupon to prevent unauthorized reproduction. The coupon distribution system may be used to obtain additional information about the potential consumer for future marketing purposes. The present invention greatly facilitates and makes economical distribution of coupons or certificates.
