An absorbent composition for purifying gases which contain acidic components. The composition contains at least one compound of formula (I), wherein n is 2-6, p is 1-3, the R.sup.1 groups may be the same or different and represent hydrogen or C.sub.1-3 alkyl, and R.sup.2 is hydrogen, C.sub.1-3 alkyl or a group of formula (II). The composition is an aqueous solution of 20-60 w/w %. ##STR1##
