A glass-ceramic which is substantially and desirably totally transparent, and which contains a willemite predominant crystal phase within the ternary Mg.sub.2 SiO.sub.4 --Zn.sub.2 SiO.sub.4 --Li.sub.4 SiO.sub.4 system. The glass-ceramic is formed from precursor glasses having the following compositions, in weight percent on an oxide basis, of 25-60 SiO.sub.2, 4-20 Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 20-55 ZnO, 0-12 MgO, 0-18 K.sub.2 O, 0-12 Na.sub.2 O, 0-30 GeO.sub.2, with the condition that .SIGMA.K.sub.2 O+Na.sub.2 O.gtoreq.5. The glass-ceramic may be doped with up to 1 wt. % Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 to impart optical activity thereto.

Ein Glas-keramisches, das im wesentlichen und wünschenswert total transparent ist und das eine willemite überwiegende Kristallphase innerhalb des dreifachen Mg.sub.2 SiO.sub.4 -- Zn.sub.2 SiO.sub.4 -- Li.sub.4 SiO.sub.4 System enthält. Das Glas-keramische wird von den Vorläufergläsern gebildet, die den folgenden Aufbau, in den Gewichtprozenten auf einer Oxidgrundlage, von 25-60 SiO.sub.2, 4-20 Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 20-55 ZnO, 0-12 MgO, 0-18 K.sub.2 O, 0-12 Na.sub.2 O, 0-30 GeO.sub.2, mit der Bedingung dieses SIGMA.K.sub.2 O+Na.sub.2 O.gtoreq.5 haben. Das Glas-keramische kann mit bis 1 % der Gew. Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 lackiert werden, um optische Tätigkeit dazu zuzuteilen.
