A mullite composition is comprised substantially of mullite grains that are essentially chemically bound wherein the composition has at least two adjoining regions that have substantially different microstructures. The composition may be produced by forming a mixture of one or more precursor compounds having the elements present in mullite; shaping the mixture into a porous green shape applying a nucleation control agent to a portion of the porous green shape and then heating the porous green shape under an atmosphere and to a temperature sufficient to form the mullite composition.

Une composition en mullite est composée sensiblement des grains de mullite qui essentiellement sont chimiquement liés où la composition a au moins deux régions contiguës qui ont des microstructures essentiellement différentes. La composition peut être produite en formant un mélange d'un ou plusieurs composés de précurseur ayant les éléments actuels en mullite ; formant le mélange dans une forme verte poreuse appliquant un agent de commande de nucléation à une partie de la forme verte poreuse et puis chauffant la forme verte poreuse sous une atmosphère et à une température suffisamment pour former la composition en mullite.
