A pharmaceutical composition that inhibits or slows the growth of viruses
in animals, particularly in mammals, while reducing cytoxicity of
ribavirin or interferon is disclosed. This same composition can be used to
treat viral infections, particularly hepatitis C. The composition
preferably comprises from about 10 mg to about 6000 mg of a
(5-aryl-1,2,4-thiadiazol)-3-yl thiourea derivative or
(5-aryl-1,2,4-thiadiazol)-3-yl urea derivative of the formula:

wherein X is oxygen or sulfur, R is hydrogen or alkyl having from 1-3
carbons, n is 0-4, R.sub.1 is independently selected from the group
consisting of hydrogen, alkyl having from 1 to 7 carbon atoms, chloro,
bromo or fluoro, oxychloro, alkoxy having the formula --O(CH.sub.2).sub.y
CH.sub.3, wherein y is from 1 to 6, or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid
addition salt or prodrug thereof and a safe and effective amount of
ribavirin, interferon or mixtures thereof. The preferred compound is
(5-phenyl-1,2,4-thiadazol-3-yl) thiourea.
Une composition pharmaceutique qui empêche ou ralentit la croissance des virus chez les animaux, en particulier dans les mammifères, tout en réduisant le cytoxicity de la ribavirine ou l'interféron est révélé. Cette même composition peut être employée pour traiter des infections virales, en particulier l'hépatite C. La composition comporte de préférence du magnésium environ 10 au magnésium environ 6000 de a (thio-urée 5-aryl-1,2,4-thiadiazol)-3-yl dérivée ou (dérivé d'urée 5-aryl-1,2,4-thiadiazol)-3-yl de la formule : ## du ## STR1 où X est l'oxygène ou soufre, R est l'hydrogène ou l'alkyl ayant de 1-3 carbones, n est 0-4, R.sub.1 est indépendamment choisi dans le groupe l'hydrogène , alkyl ayant de 1 à 7 atomes de carbone, chloro, bromo ou fluoro, oxychloro, alcoxy ayant la formule -- O(CH.sub.2).sub.y CH.sub.3, où y est de 1 à 6, ou un sel pharmaceutiquement acceptable d'addition acide ou prodrogue en et une quantité sûre et efficace de ribavirine, d'interféron ou de mélanges. Le composé préféré est la thio-urée (5-phenyl-1,2,4-thiadazol-3-yl).
