Forming metal and metalloid carbides by mechanically inducing a reduction reaction between a metal chloride (or a metalloid chloride) and a metal carbide. The reduction reactions are induced mechanically by milling the reactants. Alloy carbides may also be produced by mechanically inducing the co-reduction of metal chlorides or metalloid chlorides and a metal carbide according to the equation: M.sub.1 chloride+M.sub.2 chloride+M.sub.3 carbide.fwdarw.M.sub.1 M.sub.2 carbide, where M.sub.1 is a metal or metalloid, M.sub.2 is a metal or metalloid and M.sub.3 is a suitable carbide reducing agent.

Formung Metall- und Metalloidkarbide, durch eine Verkleinerung Reaktion zwischen einer Metallchlorverbindung (oder einer Metalloidchlorverbindung) und einem Metallkarbid mechanisch verursachen. Die Verkleinerung Reaktionen werden mechanisch durch das Prägen der Reaktionsmittel verursacht. Legierung Karbide können auch produziert werden, indem man mechanisch die Co-Verkleinerung der Metallchlorverbindungen oder der Metalloidchlorverbindungen und des Metallkarbids entsprechend der Gleichung verursacht: M.sub.1 chloride+M.sub.2 chloride+M.sub.3 carbide.fwdarw.M.sub.1 M.sub.2 Karbid, in dem M.sub.1 ein Metall oder ein Metalloid ist, M.sub.2 ist ein Metall, oder Metalloid und M.sub.3 ist ein Reduktionsmittel des verwendbaren Karbids.
