The present invention is a system and method for providing group communication services in an existing communication system. Group communications are enabled by installing a communications manager in a data network such as the Internet. The communications manager acts as a configurable switch, allowing communications from any group member to be transmitted to all other group members. The communications processed by the communications manager take the form of data packets, suitable for transmission over the data network. The data packets are generated by communication devices operating within the communication system. The use of the communications manager further allows users of other communication systems and devices to participate in group communications with each other.

De onderhavige uitvinding is een systeem en een methode om groepscommunicatiediensten in een bestaand communicatie systeem te verlenen. De mededelingen van de groep worden toegelaten door een communicatie manager in een gegevensnetwerk zoals Internet te installeren. De communicatie manager handelt als configureerbare schakelaar, die mededelingen van om het even welk groepslid toelaat om aan alle andere groepsleden worden overgebracht. De mededelingen die door de communicatie manager worden verwerkt nemen de vorm van gegevenspakketten, geschikt voor transmissie over het gegevensnetwerk. De gegevenspakketten worden door communicatie apparaten geproduceerd die binnen het communicatie systeem werken. Het gebruik van de communicatie manager staat verder gebruikers van andere communicatie systemen en apparaten toe om aan groepscommunicatie met elkaar deel te nemen.
