Bis-sulfonamido hydroxyethylamino compounds are effective as retroviral protease inhibitors, and in particular as inhibitors of HIV protease. The present invention relates to retroviral protease inhibiting compounds of the formula: ##STR1## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, prodrug or ester thereof, wherein the variables are as defined herein.
