The present invention is directed to substituted
N'-(arylcarbonyl)-benzhydrazides, N'-(arylcarbonyl)-benzylidene-hydrazides
and analogs thereof, represented by the Formulae I and II:

wherein Ar.sub.1, Ar.sub.2, and R.sub.1 -R.sub.2 are defined herein. The
present invention also relates to the discovery that compounds having
Formulae I and II are activators of caspases and inducers of apoptosis.
Therefore, the activators of caspases and inducers of apoptosis of this
invention may be used to induce cell death in a variety of clinical
conditions in which uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells
occurs.
Die anwesende Erfindung wird auf ersetztes N'-(arylcarbonyl)-benzhydrazides, N'-(arylcarbonyl)-benzylidene-hydrazides und Entsprechungen davon verwiesen, durch die Formeln I und II dargestellt: ## STR1 ## worin Ar.sub.1, Ar.sub.2 und R.sub.1 - R.sub.2 werden hierin definiert. Die anwesende Erfindung bezieht auch auf der Entdeckung, die die Mittel, die Formeln I und II haben, Aktivatoren von caspases und Veranlasser von apoptosis sind. Folglich können die Aktivatoren von caspases und die Veranlasser von apoptosis dieser Erfindung benutzt werden, um Zelle Tod in einer Vielzahl der klinischen Bedingungen zu verursachen, in denen unbeaufsichtigtes Wachstum und Verbreitung der anormalen Zellen auftritt.
