A phosphonate nucleotide compound represented by the following formula (I)
or a salt thereof, or a hydrate or solvate thereof:

wherein,
R.sup.1 is a hydroxyl group; each of R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is independently a
hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl group, an alkanoyloxymethyl
group, an alkanoylthioethyl group, or an ethyl group substituted by one or
more halogen atoms; R.sup.4 is a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl
group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 hydroxyalkyl group, or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl
group substituted by one or more halogen atoms; and X is CH or a nitrogen
atom.
