A communication device (11) is provided with a microprocessor (15) and a
memory storage device (13). A battery (14) associated with the
communication device 11 is provided with memory 16. The memory storage
device and the memory contain values relevant to the manufacturing of each
device, respectively. The microprocessor reads the memory storage device
and the memory and makes a determination of whether the communication
device, the battery, and the combination thereof are intrinsically safe to
be used in a hazardous environment, and presents the results to a user.
