A monitoring system suitable for a vehicle has a display which displays an
image of the road area traveled by the vehicle. The system further
comprises a controller which is capable of allocating differing sets of
grey values held in its memory to the objects in the image. Changes in the
allocation of grey values are made in response to a user input, which in a
preferred embodiment comprises a grey value allocation switch.
