Fast, under-sampled raster scans are created and measured in order to automatically
determine appropriate settings for the adjustable gain detector that is employed
in the device. The non-linear nature of the detector response to gain settings,
and the characteristics of the raster scan are modeled to create an overall transfer
function that is used to calculate the correct settings of the detector for a full-resolution
image. Multiple samples are introduced to the scanning device under computer control,
and the auto-exposure device is employed for each sample without user intervention.
