Energy tunable solid state sources of neutral particles are described. In
a disclosed embodiment, a halogen particle source includes a solid halide sample,
a photon source positioned to deliver photons to a surface of the halide, and a
collimating means positioned to accept a spatially defined plume of hyperthermal
halogen particles emitted from the sample surface.
