Amphiphilic [5:1]- and [3:3]- hexakisadducts of fullerenes

Herein are disclosed substituted fullerenes, comprising a fullerene core (Cn), wherein n is an even integer greater than or equal to 60; 3 or 5 dihydrocarbylmalonate (>C(COOR.sup.1)(COOR.sup.2)) groups bonded to the fullerene core; and 1 or 3 polar extended malonate groups (>C(COOR.sup.3)(COOR.sup.4)) bonded to the fullerene core. The substituted fullerenes can form micelles, and can be used to ameliorate oxidative stress diseases.
