An acellular red blood cell substitute which comprises an essentially tetramer-free,
substantially stroma-free, cross-linked, polymerized, pyridoxylated hemoglobin
and a nontoxic, pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, its use and a process for
preparing said acellular red blood cell substitute.
