The invention also includes methods for modifying a hepatitis C virus polynucleotide, selecting a replication competent hepatitis C virus polynucleotide, detecting a replication competent hepatitis C virus polynucleotide, and identifying a compound that inhibits replication of a hepatitis C virus polynucleotide.
