An automatic transmission, which has at least six selectable forward
speeds, includes a reduction planetary gearset that reduces speed of
rotation input from an engine, a plurality of planetary gearsets disposed
behind the reduction planetary gearset, a plurality of clutches that are
disposed radially beyond the plurality of planetary gearsets, and a
plurality of brakes that are disposed radially beyond the plurality of
clutches. The plurality of planetary gearsets includes a ring gear as an
input member that inputs reduced rotation from the reduction planetary
gearset. Individually, planetary gearsets include a single set of pinion
gears. The forward speeds of the transmission are selectable through a
combination of engagement and disengagement of the plurality of clutches
and the plurality of brakes. Each brake overlaps with a corresponding
clutch in the axial direction.
