An absolute measuring system for the determination of angles or paths is
described. During normal operation the encoder of this system is fed by a
voltage supply (mains). If the voltage supply fails the encoder is
switched to an auxiliary power supply which uses less energy. In this
operating mode the encoder only calculates a coarse value of the measured
value which it stores in the memory. To maintain the auxiliary power
supply a chargeable memory is provided which is assigned to the encoder.
