The invention relates to novel sulfonamides of general formula (I) ##STR00001## where the substituents R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, A and X have the given meanings, pharmaceutical compositions containing them, and a method of using them as antiviral agents, in particular against cytomegaloviruses.
