Processes to polymerize or oligomerize olefins by contacting olefins with .alpha.-diimine metal complexes. In particular, alpha olefins can be produced in high selectivity by contacting ethylene with selected .alpha.-diimine metal complexes. In some cases an activator such as an alkylaluminum compound is also contacted with ethylene and the .alpha.-diimine metal complexes.
