Granulated forms of various active ingredients can be prepared with a
small amount of a dissolvable polymer and a solvent for that polymer. The
solvent dissolves at least a portion of the polymer. This dissolved
polymer acts as a particle lubricant for the extrusion process and, when
the solvent is removed, as a binder for the final extrudate. A
poly(alkylene oxide) is preferred and, in the presence of a small amount
of solvent, dissolves sufficiently to provide lubricity to the extrusion
mixture that the solids can be extruded with little friction and
associated local temperature rise thru the extrusion die.
